Sims Hugo Neu has decided to leave Navassa

It's not over yet!

Sims-Hugo Neu has announced it will not build a landfill on Mount Misery Road on former county unincorporated land that was satellite annexed by the town of Navassa. However, we cannot claim victory yet. Sims-Hugo Neu still owns the property, now zoned as heavy industrial, and could sell the site for use as a dump to another company. The site location is ideal for shipping in scrap, with convenient rail, water and road access. Instead of auto shredded residue (ASR), we could be faced with a company shredding computers or other electronic equipment. Pollution would still be an issue.

The Solid Waste Management Act of 2007 legislation has been passed to strengthen landfill regulations in North Carolina. This legislation will ensure the State doesn't become the dumping ground for other states' and countries' garbage.
